Fr Maurice Sullivan

January 1976 - December 1977

was our next Pastor commencing in January 1976. He had already spent some time with us as assistant to Fr. Conlon in 1970. Maurie is country bred and still carries the smell of the gum trees. Growing up in a family of seven children gave him a good reach which came in handy when he started visiting families and joining them for the evening meal. He started the Natovi Club Youth Group. This group raised money for the Natovi Mission in Fiji, sang and played guitars at the Sunday evening folk Mass and organised social functions. About 40 marriages took place between Natovi Club members.

The major building project of the seventies was the new school building which was completed in May 1977 and opened at a special Commemorative Mass on 12 May, the celebrant being His Lordship Bishop Patrick Murphy D.D. The mass was followed by opening ceremony and Blessing of the school and a barbecue on the Fr. Harper Oval. Maurice was also responsible for the famous "tin shed" behind the church which was used for the recycling of bottles, newspapers and Fr. M. Sullivan C.M. clothing for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Despite his building activities he always saw the personal growth of his parishioners as more important than buildings. He left here to become Parish Priest of Ashfield and then to Medina W.A. He then became Parish Priest at St. Joseph' s, Malvern, Victoria.
