Fr Hugh Murray

January 1985 - December 1987

"Little Hughie" was once described as an intellectual but this was a computer error; it should have been electrician. As curate to Fr. Harper he had worked on the construction of the new church as builder's labourer, would be foreman and electrician. The fact that he didn't finish up fried to a crisp with one finger stuck in a fuse box is definite proof that God looks after his own.

Fr. Murray' s methods of ambushing parishioners knew I no bounds. He asked the ' trickiest questions and I provoked many arguments. Controversial and thought provoking subjects were his meat and potatoes, though he got his fair share of the other meat and potatoes.

In 1987 two bequests were made to the Parish. One furnished the back chapel behind the statue of the Madonna, the other provided new cladding, roofing and skylights for the centre tower. The ventilation and cooling system were then added. The new lectern was built by an anonymous carpenter from donated timber. During all this activity Fr. Murray was everywhere, helping, advising, questioning and pestering. How he ever got time for the theology, poetry, Vatican 2, the meaning of life (it's 42 Hughie) is the eighth wonder of Marsfield. He left us to join Vincare, which is an outreach of the Vincentians in an attempt to alleviate the distress and suffering of those with HIV and AIDS.
