Fr James Maloney

January 1979 - December 1984

followed Fr. Sullivan in January 1979. At that time the Parish office was in St. Joseph's Seminary and it was decided to build a new presbytery and Parish Centre in the church grounds. Mr John Vollmer and Mr John Egan, an architect, surveyed the site and drew up plans. The presbytery was commenced in 1982 and was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Murphy D.D. on 27th February 1983. This was followed by the traditional barbecue on the oval.

Fr. Maloney had been the first pupil to enrol at Marist Brothers Eastwood in l911 (is this right Jim?) and so knew the area well. He introduced the famous Parish dinners. The Parish was divided into areas and parishioners from those streets were invited to bring a dish to the Parish centre for dinner. The degree of planning can be judged by the fact that no-one ever turned up with the same dish, although there is still a very nice willow pattern dish in the presbytery kitchen.

Another innovation of Fr. Maloney's was the "Marsfield Messenger" a quarterly publication of Parish news, now sadly defunct but I believe the corpse is stirring. Back in the days when poetry rhymed every Australian Catholic could quote a verse or two from the great Irish Australian balladist John O'Brien and one of the best told of "Terry the Presbytery Dog." Fr. Maloney and his dog Imp brought back that old tradition, stirring memories of long forgotten school days.

The Parish Council began. With the help of Sr. Maria Sullivan the Antioch Youth Group was started and many happily married couples look back on their marriage encounter sessions presided over by Fr. Maloney.

The closing of St. Joseph's seminary in 1980 marked the end of an era. No longer would the young Vincentian Priests and seminarians be able to practice on us. It reverted to it's old name, Curzon Hall, and is now an elegant and magnificent function and conference centre. As a result a new Parish group has been formed. It is called "Fathers for Elopement" and endeavours to promote the romantic and beautiful old custom of eloping by lending ladders of all sizes to eloping couples.

With all his other activities Fr. Maloney still found time to pray, wearing out two knees which were surgically replaced during his stay in Marsfield. He left us for Ashfield in 1985 and is now Spiritual Adviser to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Queensland.
