About St Anthony's Parish Marsfield
Situated within the Archdiocese of Sydney
Bounded by the parishes of Eastwood, Denistone, North Ryde and Epping
Set in the Ryde City Council region north west of Sydney, about 40 minutes by car from the CBD.
Demographics are multicultural, families and elderly.
Macquarie University is within the parish, possibly making the moving population of the parish higher. This also affects a less permanent commitment to Parish Life by some.
The Vincentian Fathers have administered Saint Anthony’s since it began in 1942.
The Church was renovated in 1969 allowing for a seating of up to 600 people. The design of the church was open plan influenced by the Second Vatican Council encouraging more laity involvement in Parish life.
The Pastoral Centre is used for administration, office accommodation and meeting rooms for many of the groups that share in Parish life.
The Parish Priest is accommodated in a cottage several blocks away.
The Parish Primary School serves children and their families in classes from Kindergarten to Year 6.
The Provincialate of the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers are situated in the Parish as are several other houses accommodating some Sisters of Mercy, Good Samaritan Sisters and Christian Brothers.
The Daughters of Charity established a Geriatric Hostel and Nursing Home in the mid 1950's and continue to operate this facility for the aged. Saint Catherine's and Bethany Villas have developed over the years and now include a dementia unit and a day care unit.
Also under the auspices of the Daughters of Charity is Seton Villa Ltd. which is a facility for developmentally disabled women The residents live in cottages scattered around the parish and participated as far as possible in parish life.
The challenges of the Second Vatican Council have been embraced by a Parish Community which has grown in numbers as the result of residential development and in diversification as a result of the backgrounds of our newer parishioners.
